Today, I was completely bummed out over my book. I mean, really! Who wants to write a book they know is boring? It also didn't help that I got hung up waiting to pick up my husband from work for 2 HOURS before he told me to go on home and he'd call me to pick him up later. Crazy Army. Stupid me, while we're at it. I left my notebook at home, so I wasted 2 entire hours that I could have been writing. However, I came to a nifty realization this evening. (Bear with me here. I'm tired...)
I made myself sit down and write for 30 minutes. I'm sad to say that was about all I did today, but at least I did something! Well, minus a 10-15 minute sprint I did with my middle son while trying to make him do his spelling words. ;-)
Anyway, the realization I came upon was this. I don't think I'm writing mainstream fiction this year. The entire theme that's running under the storyline is one of hope and redemption from a shattered past. The way it's being written is making me think it's literary instead of mainstream. It's 100% character driven and the ideas are a little deeper than something you'd find in a mainstream novel. So, that would explain why it seems to be flowing well, if a little on the "boring" side. Once I thought about it from the literary angle, it all started to make sense. The book is not attempting to make itself more interesting. As a matter of fact, it keeps wanting weird little 'hints' thrown in alluding to deeper meaning. I'll keep pushing through the book, though I'll admit it's more interesting to me now that I realize it's not meant to be mainstream. I don't expect a lot of people to understand it or enjoy it. If I like it, somewhat, when the rough draft is finished, then that's all that matters. Unlike last year's novel, it may never be worth major polishing and possible publishing, but as long as I enjoy writing it, then that's all that matters. And now, I'm very interested in seeing how it turns out.
